Stogumber Parish Council owns and manages the Beacon Field and village car park on Station Road and the car-parking area in The Square opposite the pub and village shop.
If these facilities are required to be used for a third party organised event, please note the document The use of the Beacon Field, the Beacon Field Car Park and the Village Square for organised events.
The Beacon Field is an open space of approximately five acres that is a most valuable open access space in the village and is used by many individuals and community groups.
This field was bought at auction by Stogumber Parish Council in March 2011 for the benefit of Stogumber. It was paid for with a loan from the Public Works Loan Board and a grant from Church Restoration and Stogumber Heritage fund (C.R.A.S.H.).
Shortly after the field was bought, the Woodland Trust donated some young trees and the small native woodland at the top left corner was created.
The Stogumber Orchard Group have created the Village Orchard in the top right hand side of the field and further planting of trees and wild flowers has been carried out as a result of a bio-diversity grant from Somerset County Council.
The beacon itself was relocated from behind the Cricket pavilion to a better vantage point in the Beacon Field and is the focus of many village celebrations and events.
At the top left hand side of the field an outdoor hub was installed in 2021, providing accessible, covered seating which takes full advantage of the expansive views offered at the top of the field.
The permanent pasture in the field is managed by mowing for hay annually and then grazing with sheep.
Further fundraising by the Parish Council was carried out, in addition to using precept funds, to create the hard all weather village car park at the foot of Beacon Field. This car park provides safe, off road parking close to the Village Hall and school.
Stogumber Parish Council has leased and installed a defibrillator in the centre of the village. This is located in the porch of St Mary’s church which is always accessible 24 hours a day.
An annual defibrillator awareness and training day is held, free of charge, for any parishioners wishing to attend and learn how to use the device in an emergency.
The Parish Council also owns and is responsible for various other assets in the parish. For a full list, please contact the Parish Council Clerk.
